Trenin Dmitri

Director of studies and chairman of research council at Moscow Carnegie Center

Graduated cum laude from the Military Institute, Ministry of Defense (1977), served in the armed forces of USSR and Russia from 1972 to 1993. During that period he worked in Iraq within the contingent of Soviet specialists, in GDR and Western Berlin in the department of foreign relations in the headquarters of the Soviet forces in Germany, took part in negotiations with US on the nuclear and space arms in Switzerland, lectured in Moscow. He is the first Russian officer to become senior fellow of the NATO Military College in Rome. Retired Lieutenant Colonel. Following retirement from the army he worked as senior fellow at the Europe Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, guest professor of the Free University of Brussels. Starting from 1994 he is working in Moscow Carnegi Center. Leading researcher of Fund of Carnegi for International Peace (Washington), director of the «Foreign policy and security» program. Author of a number of books published in Russia, USA, Germany and Austria. Among them: «The end of Eurasia: Russia between geopolitics and globalization», «South time: Russia in Chechnya, Chechnya in Russia», «A strategy for the World of stability» (coauthored), «The return of Russia: President Putin’s foreign policy», «Baltic chance: the Baltic states, Russia an the West in emerging Big Europe». Executive editor of a number of books including: «Russian military: the power and politics», «Russia: next ten years» and «Ethnic and regional conflicts in Eurasia». D.Trenin’s articles and commentaries appeared on the pages of leading publications in Russia, America, Europe, China and Japan.
